Sunroom money tips

A sunroom is likely to be the second most expensive item you will ever buy, after a house. Over-spends on construction costs can be extremely expensive therefore it worth thinking about ways in which to save or at least have better control over where your money spent.

Sunroom Project Management

Do not be afraid of hiring an architect or professional builder to run and projects for you. It is common among DIY or self-build community to assume that you can save money by taking on the project management yourself. This is true if the project all goes to plan, but can go seriously wrong if things are not ordered on time and contractors are waiting for you - whilst you pay them! Generally, for a small sunroom build, the actual project planning will be fairly straightforward. However, more complicated sunroom plans may be better organized by someone who does this for a living like an architect. They may also be able to save you money when dealing with suppliers (merchants and contractors). Remember they do this job day after day and so know it inside out and who to contact personally.

Contingency fund

Things change on build projects of any size. It's always worth putting aside a contingency fund for those little extras (like oak frames or Italian slate floors!) or unforeseen build problems. A commonly suggested figure is 10% of the initial estimate of build costs. That way if things go wrong or you simply must have that special tinted glass roof then the money is there and available without having to re-negotiate with a lender.

Shop around

If you are not after anything unusual in size and design then it is much easier to get a good deal on the price. This is particularly true of buying a PVC or vinyl sunroom where there are hundreds if not thousands of companies vying for your trade. If you are after a bespoke design of sunroom or perhaps one made out of a hardwood construction, then yes you can get exactly what you want, but expect to be able to negotiate less. Still worth a try though, however if you are going for this style of sunroom then money is probably not an issue anyway.
