Sunroom Location

Surely, in a room that largely consists of glass, you would think the main thing to worry about is getting as much light into it as possible? This isn't always the case as too much sunlight can make the room too hot and not enough pushes up your heating bill. here's a discussion of what to consider for sunrooms facing different orientations

North facing sunroom

With a North facing sunroom you don't get much sun (in the Northern hemisphere of course as is the case for all orientations here) and therefore you don't really have any issue with having to cool the room apart from on really hot days where the air temperature is high. With a North facing sunroom the issue is in keeping the room warm enough to use. This means it has to be well insulated and probably will need some form of additional heating, maybe in the form of radiant floor heating or low profile wall mounted radiator for the winter months.

East facing sunroom

A sunroom in a Easterly orientation will get the sun in the morning. This means the room can be great for having breakfast in or maybe to read the papers and relax a little before starting work (if you have no children that is!) This type of sunroom may not be much good to you if you don't get up early unless you prefer to sit in the shade all the time.

South facing sunroom

A sunroom in a southerly direction will get the sun for most of day. These sunrooms can get unbearably hot in the summer months. Consideration for cooling and shade in the form of air conditioning, ventilation (through sunroom roof vents, windows and French doors) and maybe blinds is a must. Be careful with furniture and fabrics as the constant sunlight may fade the color. Coating or tinting the windows may help reduce the heat build in the sunroom. With proper cooling and thermal design this room could make a good breakfast, dining or sitting room.

West facing sunroom

A sunroom in a westerly facing direction will get little sun in the morning, but lots in the afternoon and evening (until dusk obviously). Like south facing sunrooms they can get too hot. So cooling and ventilation needs to be considered again. As the sunroom gets little sunlight during the morning it needs to be well insulated to keep winter fuel bills down. If this type of room has been thermally designed correctly it can make a good dining room.

Sunroom Location Summary

Any orientation for a sunroom can be made to work providing the advantages and disadvantages are considered and appropriate steps are taken in the design and build to deal with them.
