Sunroom or Summerhouse

To enjoy the light and relaxed feel of a room that is almost entirely glazed does not necessarily mean you have to build a sunroom, you could instead choose to build a summerhouse.

What is a Summerhouse?

A summerhouse is a building that is separate and situated away from the main house. Often the location is in the sunniest part of the garden or perhaps at the bottom or corner of the garden. Which means people can enjoy the panorama of the garden and take in views of their house as well, all sitting from the comfort of their summerhouse.

Build for a summerhouse

Usually a summerhouse is of wooden construction although they can be made from any materials you would otherwise associate with sunrooms such as vinyl / uPVC and aluminum. Mostly they will have at least three screened or glazed walls and one solid wall, which maybe faces toward the boundary of the property. Typically they will be of traditional design (that is a square base in the Victorian or Edwardian style) or octagonal. The entrance to the summerhouse is usually a set of double doors, which in some designs can partially fold away to almost turn the summerhouse into an open porch. Great on a hot day.

What can a summerhouse be used for?

A summerhouse is a contained room away from the main house. Therefore, it is ideal as a sanctuary or retreat to step out of the fast lane of life. So, perhaps you may use it as a hobby room or maybe just to read that new novel you've picked up. They can also be superb places to entertain friends, maybe dining in the garden, but in the comfort of glazed room which is warm, dry and free of insects.

Summerhouse conclusions

Summerhouses can make a great alternative to a sunroom addition. If you like the design and informality of a summerhouse but are still set on a sunroom addition then it is possible to buy sunrooms that are built in a 'summerhouse' style, that is an attached summerhouse.
